Best Ski Resorts in Colorado 2026-27: Epic vs Ikon & Dates
Checked 25 and 26 October 2026. Stats, prices and dates come from each resort's own site, the Epic Pass and Ikon Pass sites, or CDOT, except the sources listed as "From other sources" at the end. Opening dates are targets and move with the snow.
A Colorado ski trip gets cheap or expensive before you pick a resort. Which pass you hold, Epic, Ikon or neither, decides which mountains cost you nothing extra. So start with the pass, then pick the mountain.
This guide covers 12 selected resorts, not every Epic or Ikon resort in Colorado (Eldora, for one, is also on Ikon). It gives size, elevation, what each pass gives you, when they open, how to get there from Denver, and the winter driving rule that catches visitors out.
The 12 resorts side by side
| Resort | Pass | Skiable acres | Lifts | Base to summit (ft) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vail | Epic | 5,317 | 32 | 8,120 to 11,570 |
| Beaver Creek | Epic | 2,082 | 24 | 8,100 to 11,440 |
| Breckenridge | Epic | 2,908 | 35 | 9,600 to 12,998 |
| Keystone | Epic | 3,149 | Not stated | Not stated |
| Crested Butte | Epic | 1,547 | 15 | 9,375 to 12,162 |
| Telluride | Epic partner (eligible passes, up to 7 days) | 2,000+ | Not stated | Not stated |
| Steamboat | Ikon | 3,741 | 23 | Not stated |
| Aspen Snowmass | Ikon | 5,500+ across four mountains | Four mountains | 7,870 to 12,510 |
| Winter Park | Ikon | 3,081 | 23 | 9,000 to 12,060 |
| Copper Mountain | Ikon | 2,538 | 24 of all types, 16 chairlifts or gondolas | 9,712 to 12,441 |
| Arapahoe Basin | Ikon | 1,428 | Not stated | Summit 13,050 |
| Loveland | Neither | 1,800 lift-served | 9, plus 2 magic carpets | 10,800 to 13,010 |
Lift counts follow each resort's own count, and some resorts include conveyors. "Not stated" means the resort's page did not give a clear figure. Aspen Snowmass is four mountains, and published totals differ between sources, so we use the per-mountain figures from its 2025/26 stats sheet, the latest we could find: Snowmass 3,342 acres, Aspen Highlands 1,040, Aspen Mountain 906 and Buttermilk 470. Telluride's trail map lists more than 2,000 acres, but it carries a 2023/24 copyright line, so we left out its lift and trail counts.
How steep is each mountain
Resorts split their terrain by difficulty in different ways, so this table uses only the percentages each resort publishes itself.
| Resort | Beginner | Intermediate | Advanced and harder |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beaver Creek | 28% | 38% | 34% |
| Copper Mountain | 24% | 26% | 50% (32% advanced, 10% expert, 8% extreme) |
| Vail | 18% | 29% | 53% |
| Breckenridge | 11% | 31% | 58% (24% advanced, 34% expert) |
| Crested Butte | 14% | 24% | 62% (25% advanced, 37% expert) |
| Arapahoe Basin | Not stated | Not stated | 73% |
| Winter Park | 8% | 18% | 74% (19% advanced, 52% most difficult, 3% expert only) |
Vail and Beaver Creek list three levels only. Keystone's page gives three percentages (12, 39 and 49) without labels, so we left them out. Steamboat, Aspen Snowmass, Telluride and Loveland gave no split on the pages we checked.
Beaver Creek and Copper have the biggest beginner and intermediate share. Winter Park, Arapahoe Basin and Crested Butte skew hardest. At Vail and Breckenridge, more than half the terrain is advanced or harder.
Epic, Ikon or neither
Both passes cover a lot of Colorado. They split it differently. Epic covers Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Crested Butte. Ikon covers Copper, Winter Park, Arapahoe Basin and Eldora with unlimited days, plus Steamboat and Aspen Snowmass (Steamboat is unlimited on the full pass only). Prices are as listed on 26 October 2026.
| Pass | Adult price | Colorado access |
|---|---|---|
| Epic Pass | $1,169 (ages 31+). Ages 18–30 and 13–17: $929. Ages 5–12: $599 | Unlimited at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Crested Butte. Seven days at Telluride, then 50% off lift tickets there |
| Epic Local Pass | $869 | Cheaper, with peak dates excluded at some resorts. No Telluride access. Check the resort list on the pass page |
| Summit Value Pass | $693 (ages 19+) | Breckenridge and Keystone only. Peak dates excluded at some resorts |
| Keystone Plus Pass | $505 (ages 13+) | Keystone and more. Peak dates excluded |
| Ikon Pass | From $1,529 (ages 23+) | Unlimited at Arapahoe Basin, Copper, Eldora, Winter Park and Steamboat. Seven days across all four Aspen Snowmass mountains |
| Ikon Base Pass | From $1,099 (ages 23+) | Unlimited at Arapahoe Basin, Copper, Eldora and Winter Park. Five days at Steamboat and five days at Snowmass only. Limited blackout dates |
- Short trip: Run the numbers before you buy a pass. Epic sells Day Passes for 1 to 7 days. Ikon sells Session Passes for 2, 3 or 4 days.
- Young skiers and kids: Epic takes 20% off its Epic Pass and Epic Local Pass for ages 13–30. Ikon takes up to $100 off each Child Pass (ages 5–12) when you buy an adult Ikon Pass.
- Aspen: Aspen Snowmass's own Ikon guide says the full Ikon Pass gives seven days across all four mountains. The Base Pass gives five days at Snowmass only, with blackout dates on 26 to 30 December, 16 and 17 January, and 13 and 14 February.
- Telluride: Only the Epic Pass and the Epic 4–7 Day Pass with All Resort Access include it. Epic Local, Epic Military, Epic 1–3 Day and 4–7 Day passes with Limited Access do not. You need the physical card, because the mobile pass does not work there.
If you have an Epic Pass
Vail
Vail averages 354 inches of snow a year. Its base sits lower than Breckenridge, Copper or Winter Park. The Town of Vail puts the drive from Denver airport at about two hours.
Beaver Creek
Average snowfall is 323 inches. Beaver Creek and Crested Butte are the last two Epic resorts in Colorado to open.
Breckenridge
Breckenridge has five peaks and averages 355 inches of snow. The Imperial Express chairlift tops out at 12,840 feet, which the town's tourism office calls the highest chairlift in North America. You do not need a car here. The resort lists the Epic Mountain Express shuttle from the airport to your door, a free in-town bus called Breck FreeRide, and the BreckConnect Gondola between town and the mountain. If you do drive, parking is paid. Reserve through the Breck Park app, or arrive before 8 a.m. on busy weekends and holidays. Overflow lots with a free shuttle open when the main lots fill.
Keystone
Keystone is the budget way into Epic Colorado. The Keystone Plus Pass costs $505 and the Summit Value Pass, which adds Breckenridge, costs $693. A four-day pack for Keystone and Crested Butte costs $348, with peak dates excluded. The resort says Denver airport is 90 miles away on I-70.
Crested Butte
Crested Butte gets 236 inches of snow a year. Its own page lists 561 acres of expert terrain and calls the resort the North American birthplace of inbounds extreme skiing.
Telluride (Epic partner)
Epic Pass holders get up to seven days here, then 50% off lift tickets. The Epic Local, Epic Military and Epic 1–3 Day passes do not include Telluride. You need the physical pass card. If you do not have one, you can print or reprint it at the Mountain Village ticket windows in Heritage Plaza, where a $5 printing fee may apply. Telluride targets a 26 November opening and a 4 April 2027 close, subject to weather. Lifts start at 9 a.m. The resort sells a Refundable Season Pass: cancel for any reason before the season starts for a full refund, or until 28 February 2027 for a prorated one.
If you have an Ikon Pass
Steamboat
Steamboat says it is Colorado's second-largest ski area after Vail. It added more than 650 acres of advanced and expert terrain in Mahogany Ridge and Fish Creek Canyon. That terrain has avalanche risk. The resort recommends a beacon, shovel and probe, a buddy, and saving ski patrol's number (970-871-5911) before you go. Fish Creek Canyon is extreme terrain, and the way out is a 30 to 45 minute traverse hike.
Steamboat is about 156 miles from Denver, roughly 2 hours 45 minutes, says the Steamboat Chamber. You can skip the drive. In winter Yampa Valley Regional Airport has nonstop flights from cities including Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York JFK, Newark and Seattle, on Alaska, American, JetBlue, Southwest and United. Southwest flies three times a day from Denver from mid-December to early April.
Aspen Snowmass
Four mountains share one pass. Snowmass is the biggest, with 3,342 acres, 98 trails and 20 lifts. Aspen Highlands has 1,040 acres, 144 trails and a 12,392 foot summit. Aspen Mountain has 906 acres and 127 trails. Buttermilk has 470 acres, 44 trails and a 9,900 foot summit. The resort's stats sheet gives sizes, not difficulty splits.
Aspen Mountain gets a new high-speed quad, Nell Bell, which replaces the Bell Mountain and Little Nell lifts. At Snowmass, the Ullrhof restaurant reopens after a $42 million rebuild. It holds 600 or more guests and is the resort's first all-electric restaurant on the mountain.
Driving from Denver airport is about 220 miles by the resort's count. In winter the route runs on I-70 to Glenwood Springs, then 41 miles on Highway 82. Independence Pass, the shortcut, generally closes from late October to May, so do not let a map app send you over it. Aspen's airport is three miles east of town.
Winter Park
Winter Park gets more than 344 inches of snow a year and sits on both Ikon passes with unlimited days. The resort is rebuilding its snowmaking over several years, with more fan guns this season to help it open earlier.
Copper Mountain
Copper is 75 miles from Denver. Its 157 trails split 24% beginner, 26% intermediate, 32% advanced, 10% expert and 8% extreme. Average snowfall is 299 inches, but recent seasons ranged from 263 inches in 2025/26 to 352 in 2023/24. Base-area lifts run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Arapahoe Basin
A-Basin is high and steep. The resort says 73% of its terrain is advanced or expert. Two short lift rides take you to 12,500 feet. The Beavers add more than 300 acres, and Montezuma Bowl, the south-facing back bowl, adds 400. The East Wall is a hike to 13,050 feet. The Steep Gullies are expert-only, with a 20 to 30 minute hike back to the base. A-Basin celebrates its 80th anniversary on 4–6 December 2026.
If you have no pass
Loveland
Loveland averages more than 380 inches of snow. It does not appear on the Epic or Ikon resort lists we checked, so plan to buy its tickets or passes directly. The resort is targeting an opening between late October and early November, weather permitting.
Opening calendar for 2026–27
| Target date | Resort | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Late October to early November | Loveland | Target, weather permitting |
| October | Keystone | Opens as soon as conditions allow, no fixed date |
| 6 November | Breckenridge, Copper | Target |
| 13 November | Vail | Target (per ColoradoBiz) |
| 21 November | Steamboat | Tentative (Ikon list, 29 September) |
| 25 November | Beaver Creek, Crested Butte | Target |
| 26 November | Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Telluride | Target |
| 12 December | Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk | Target |
| Not announced | Arapahoe Basin, Winter Park | A-Basin says it will open as soon as possible. Winter Park has no date on Ikon's list |
Dates were published between August and mid-October 2026 and can change. Check the resort's site before you book.
Getting from Denver
| Resort | Distance or time | Measured from |
|---|---|---|
| Vail | About 2 hours | Denver airport |
| Keystone | 90 miles | Denver airport |
| Copper | 75 miles | Denver |
| Steamboat | 156 miles, about 2 hours 45 minutes | Denver |
| Aspen | About 220 miles | Denver airport |
No train runs from Denver airport straight to a resort. The A Line goes only to Denver Union Station downtown. From there, the seasonal Winter Park Express train leaves Denver at 7 a.m. and returns at 4:35 p.m., about 2.5 hours each way, with fares from $19. Rides start in December, and tickets were not on sale when we checked. For every other resort, your options are mountain shuttles (pickup at Level 5, Island 4, for Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper, Aspen and Steamboat), a rental car or a charter bus. The airport recommends booking shuttles in advance. Eagle County Airport sits close to Vail and about 65 miles west of Keystone, and it can save you a long drive.
The winter driving rule
Colorado has two winter rules for passenger vehicles, and CDOT can switch either one on for any state highway. Signs, COtrip.org and road alerts tell you when one is active. Between Morrison and Dotsero on I-70, CDOT says the laws can be enforced from 1 September to 31 May, or whenever conditions require.
- Traction Law: Your tyres need at least 3/16 inch of tread and must be all-weather or winter tyres (mountain-snowflake icon, or M+S, or M/S). If they are not, you must carry chains or an approved alternative traction device. CDOT's fact sheet says 4WD and AWD vehicles need the same tread depth.
- Chain Law: CDOT calls this the last safety step before it closes a highway. When it is in effect, every vehicle must have chains or an approved alternative traction device.
- Fine: $100 plus a $33 surcharge. If the violation closes a travel lane, it can be $500 plus a $157 surcharge.
CDOT recommends an AWD or 4WD vehicle in the mountains whenever possible. Its page does not cover rental cars, so ask the rental company about its tyres before you leave the airport. Check road conditions on cotrip.org before every drive. For trip basics, see how to plan a successful trip.
Altitude
Copper's base is at 9,712 feet and its summit at 12,441. The resort's own safety page lists the common effects: headache, nausea, dizziness, poor sleep, coughing and trouble breathing. Its advice:
- Keep exercise moderate for the first few days.
- Sip water through the day. You will probably need more than usual.
- Eat plenty of carbohydrates, and cut back on alcohol and caffeine.
- Get medical help if symptoms get worse, are severe or do not go away.
The sun is stronger at altitude, even on cloudy days. On very cold days, cover all exposed skin, ski with a buddy and check each other for discoloured patches. If you like winter scenery without the lift tickets, see 10 beautiful snowfall places in the US or the most affordable mountain towns.
FAQ
Is Epic or Ikon better for Colorado?
It depends on where you want to ski. Epic gives unlimited days at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Crested Butte. Ikon gives unlimited days at Copper, Winter Park, Arapahoe Basin and Eldora, plus Steamboat on the full Ikon Pass. Pick the pass that owns the resorts you will actually visit.
Can I take a train from Denver airport to the ski resorts?
Not directly. The airport's RTD A Line train goes only to Denver Union Station. The seasonal Winter Park Express train runs from there to Winter Park, with rides starting in December. For other resorts, use a mountain shuttle, a rental car or a charter bus, and book shuttles in advance.
Do I need snow tyres in Colorado?
When the Traction Law is active, your tyres need at least 3/16 inch of tread and must be all-weather or winter tyres (mountain-snowflake icon, or M+S, or M/S), or you must carry chains or an approved alternative traction device. When the Chain Law is active, every vehicle needs chains or an approved device. The fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, or $500 plus a $157 surcharge if the violation closes a travel lane.
Can I use my Epic Pass at Telluride?
It depends on the pass. The Epic Pass and the Epic 4–7 Day Pass with All Resort Access include up to seven days in 2026/27. Epic Local, Epic Military and Epic 1–3 Day passes do not include Telluride. You must carry the physical pass card, because the mobile pass is not accepted there. After seven days you get 50% off lift tickets.
Which Colorado resort is the biggest?
Among single ski areas on this list, Vail is the largest at 5,317 acres. Aspen Snowmass is four separate mountains that add up to more than 5,500 acres, and its biggest single mountain, Snowmass, has 3,342. Steamboat says it ranks second in Colorado.
Can I fly straight to the resort?
For some, yes. Yampa Valley Regional Airport serves Steamboat, and Aspen's airport is three miles from town. Eagle County Airport is close to Vail. Check the airlines that serve each airport for your dates.
What if my plans change after I buy a pass?
Epic Passes include Epic Coverage at no extra charge, with refunds for personal injury, job loss or resort closures. Ikon offers refundable Ikon Pass and Ikon Base Pass options at checkout. For lift tickets and lodging, read our guide to cancel-for-any-reason cover and how to choose travel insurance.
How do I avoid altitude sickness on a ski trip?
Go easy on exercise for the first few days, drink water through the day, eat carbohydrates and limit alcohol and caffeine. See a doctor if symptoms are severe or do not go away.
Do the resorts open on the dates listed?
Not always. Opening dates are targets and depend on snow and temperature. Arapahoe Basin and Winter Park had not announced a firm date when we checked.
